Fr. Damien of Molokai memorial, Paia

Paia, Maui, Hawaii — Statue at the shrine honoring Father Damien of Molokai, who spent over 16 years ministering to victims of leprosy (Hansen’s disease) at the leper colony on MolokaŹ»i, and ultimately contracted and died from the disease himself.

This shine is located at Holy Rosary Parish, 954 Baldwin Ave, Paia. The inscription reads:

ME KE ALOHA POINA OLE

Oahu’s Damien Museum, most recently located at St. Augustine By the Sea Catholic Church in Waikiki, has has been closed to the public for quite some time and is in dire need of renovations and repair. The museum’s website is still online, offering images and information concerning Father Damien’s life and ministry.
