Black Rock torch lighting: Maui Sheraton

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii — The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa’s daily cliff dive ceremony on Kaanapali Beach at sunset is performed by a cliff diver who first lights a trail of torches out to the lava formation known as Black Rock (Pu’u Keka’a), the site where ancient Hawaiians believed that their spirits “jumped off,” or left this world:

Upon reaching the summit, he offers his torch to the ocean below, casts his flower lei into the sea; and finally takes the breathtaking dive from Black Rock into the rolling surf below.
